The Albion Index player of the month is powered by our in-house Albion-Index Report Statement [A-IRs] that looks to numerically rate player performance in a first-team fixture involving West Bromwich Albion. The West Bromwich Albion and opposition player with the highest total A-IRs rating over the month is awarded player of the month for that period.

WBA Player of the Month: August 2014

The Albion-Index.com player of the month for August 2014 is Saido Berahino with a score of 156.89 on the A-IRs index.

Albion's 21-year-old forward appeared in all four of the Baggies' fixtures during August and was the only Albion player to score during the month with a brace of goals in the opening day 2-2 draw against Sunderland at the Hawthorns on the 16th of August.

Andre Wisdom, on a season-long loan from Liverpool, made an instant impact at the Hawthorn's finishing second in the monthly awards with 143 points. The 21-year-old defender played every minute of every game for the Baggies in August gaining bonus points for a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw against Southampton on the 23rd of August and additional points for creating a goal in Albion's penalty shoot-out victory over Oxford United in the League Cup on the 26th of August.

Central Defender Craig Dawson continued his impressive form from the end of last season to finish third in the opening awards of the 2014/15 season. The 24-year-old former England Under-21 international was an ever present at the heart of the Albion defence in August, a factor which contributed the majority of the former Rochdale AFC player's 125 points total.

  • Saido Berahino: 156.89 Pts
  • Andre Wisdom: 143 Pts
  • Craig Dawson: 125 Pts

Opposition Player of the Month: August 2014

The Albion-Index.com award for opposition player of the month for August 2014 goes to Gylfi Sigurdsson of Swansea City. The 25-year-old's all round midfield contribution consisting of all three assists in Swansea's 3-0 home victory over Albion on the 30th of August netted the Iceland midfielder 98 points and the monthly award. Indeed, the former Reading and Tottenham Hotspur player has a formidable performance record against Albion, with the Baggies failing to record a victory over a side for which Sigurdsson has made an active appearance. In eight appearances against Albion Sigurdsson has scored three goals and contributed five further assists.

Considering Swansea were the only opposition side to beat Albion in August it is perhaps understandable the top positions for opposition player of the month were dominated by players from Garry Monk's side.

Nathan Dyer's brace of goals and 92 points were not enough to secure the pacey-winger the top award for the month, but the second place in the monthly standings does further strengthen a career performance record against the Baggies which has seen the 26-year-old only ever appear on the losing side twice against Albion in nine previous active appearances.

Finishing third in August 2014 was Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. A clean sheet contribution to a winning team victory helped towards a 75 points total that saw the Polish stopper record his first shut-out against Albion.

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson: 98 Pts
  • Nathan Dyer: 92 Pts
  • Lukasz Fabianski: 75 Pts
